On 25 May, the Presidents of the regions of Emilia-Romagna and Valencia, Mr. Stefano Bonaccini and Mr. Ximo Puig, jointly wrote to President von der Leyen to highlight the need for compensation from indirect carbon costs in the ceramic tiles sector and the justification for the inclusion of this sector in the list of industries eligible for compensation under the ETS State Aid Guidelines as reviewed in September 2020.
The two regions “consider it necessary to update the guidelines by immediately initiating the process of adapting them to the real, current market conditions, already envisaged in § 68 of the Guidelines”.
The very high impact of carbon costs on ceramics and the need for supporting measures was also emphasized on 26 May by Italian Minister for Economic Development Giancarlo Giorgetti who took the opportunity of his meeting in Brussels with EVP Vestager to “draw her attention to other urgent matters starting with the need to financially support companies in the process of decarbonisation which is heavily penalising Italian industrial sectors and more particularly the ceramic and steel sectors”.
